Bald and Beautiful ?
You know what’s rarer than snow leopards? A pixie cut model in a shampoo advertisement. Apparently, women with short hair don’t need shampoo. The ad usually starts with a girl having hair dryer than the Sahara. Then comes her miracle, life saver, made by the God himself shampoo. Her hair becomes smoother and the shine can make you blind. Sashaying her hips and flicking her tresses, the same girl is now Rapunzel come alive. The point is, they have glorified long hair so much that short-haired girls have zero representation.
Is it justified when I say that hair is overrated? It’s just a bunch of dead cells anyway. The collection of heartbreaking stories around the world includes those of Cancer patients. The pain of chemo sessions combined with the loss of hair makes it a terrible experience. A majority of them wear caps because people stare at their bald head. Isn’t it embarrassing that people turn their heads to look at you? Those pitying stares are hard to ignore. All because we have set long hair standards! Why?
Since this article is all about hair, I’d like to discuss Alopecia with our fellow readers. It is a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. Alopecia is not painful; it does not make a person sick and does not lead to serious health problems. Generally, it is treatable. The most agonizing factor about it is obviously the hair fall.
A young man was once featured on ‘Humans of New York’. For those of you who don’t know, it is a photo blog that features street portraits and interviews collected on the streets of New York. The guy was suffering from Alopecia and this is what he revealed in the interview-
‘Alopecia is a weird disease to wrap your head around. It causes your immune system to turn against your body, and your hair falls out. I used to have a big blond fro that was a big part of my identity. It was hard to not get depressed when it disappeared. I started to think: “What value do I have if even my body doesn’t like itself?” As I lost more and more hair, I kept trying to comb my remaining hair over my bald spots. Eventually, I had to embrace it. On my 20th birthday, I decided that instead of having a bunch of little bald spots that I don’t like, I’m going to give myself one big one that I do like’.
Speaking of fashion standards, I find it highly strange how different they are between the two genders. Hair on the body is a sign of manliness in men. The same on women needs to plucked, shaved and waxed. We’ve got ourselves a whole industry that thrives on the hair removal procedure. It is okay to yield to it but it is completely another issue to look down on people who don’t follow that rhythm.
During the Notting Hill premiere in 1999, Julia Roberts was the first to flaunt her unshaven armpit and while many people rejoiced at the actions of this carefree actress, the haters deemed it as a fashion abomination. Inspired by Julia, many other divas including Miley Cyrus, Lola Kirke and Madonna followed suit.
So go ahead and get yourself plenty of haircuts! They grow back anyway. Do not give into the society’s typical image of a perfect woman. Perfection is objective and it is up to you to define it. Make your own fashion standards. The world is your oyster!
